Analyze the ways in which leaders such as Paul Cuffe, Frederick Douglass,
Henry Highland Garnet, Harriet Tubman, William Still, Sojourner Truth,
and David Walker fought for the rights of their fellow African Americans.
Frederick Douglass was a fugitive slave from Maryland and was probably the first
runaway to speak publicly about the abolition of slavery. His moving speeches about slavery
convinced many people to support the abolition of slavery as well as the support to help blacks
all over the country. Mr. Frederick Douglass was an author. He wrote an autobiography which
became a classic story about his experiences as a slave.
Frederick Douglass also began to publish an antislavery newspaper called North Star.
This paper won support for abolition. 1847 through 1864 was the length of existence of this
paper which converted many to help abolish slavery. Frederick Douglass also used his home as a
depot for the Underground Railroad. He helped runaway slaves flee to Canada and flee to other
places of refuge.
Sojourner Truth was another ex-slave that helped the cause of abolition. She was a slave
under the control of a wealthy Dutch landowner. In 1827, she managed to flee from her master.
After this she would join religious reformers on the streets of New York and help the cause of
slavery as well as the cause of women's rights. Even though people like Sojourner faced violent
opposition from northerners, they never quit the cause of abolition. If they never fought the
struggle then, no one would have ever helped the cause of slavery. These people made a
difference.
Harriet Tubman was an ex-slave herself. She was
the most famous and productive
conductor of the Underground Railroad. She was the bravest out of all of the conductors. She
went bask to the South 19 times to help free more then 300 slaves. Even though many of the
slaves that tried to escape got caught, people like Harriet Tubman never quiet the cause of
slavery. Not only did Harriet serve as a conductor, she was a nurse and spy for the union during
the Civil War. These efforts also helped the cause of slavery.
People like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth were great people
in the eyes of all African Americans. They knew that if they did not take risks, then no one
would really believe in the abolition of slavery. These people set a great precedent in America.
Many people have much to celebrate over the lives of these people.
